Here's the press release that went out in advance of the launch:

Ffestiniog lights up and goes green!

The Ffestiniog Town Council asks the public to help deliver it’s Green Charter to make Ffestiniog greener and better place

On Thursday 3 December hundreds of people will turn out on the streets of Blaenau Ffestiniog for the Noson Goleuo ‘Stiniog, the turning on the Christmas lights. This event usually attracts more people than any other in the town during the year. On Thursday, the lights will be turned on by members of the Blaenau based acoustic band Gwibdaith Hen Frân.

But this year will be different in that as well as turning on the Christmas lights, Gwibdaith Hen Frân member Paul Thomas, who is also the Vice Chair of the Ffestiniog Town Council, will also turn on an energy saving smart electricity metre at the Council’s office’s, thus launching the Council’s Green Charter. The Council adopted the charter earlier this year and it makes clear what the Town Council plans to do to protect and enhance the environment, and what businesses and individuals can do to help.

The Town Council’s Offices will be open 6pm to 8pm on Thursday, and members of the Council will be welcoming visitors, offering a soft drinks and mince pies and explaining how the Council aims to make Ffestiniog a greener and better place.

The Council’s Green Charter, below, includes aiming to cut the Council’s own energy use, promoting the area as a centre green tourism and outdoor activities and working with the Green Town Project to promote green initiatives in the town.

Cllr Rory Francis, a member of the Town Council, says: “The Noson Goleuo is an amazing occasion, when everyone in Ffestiniog turns out to celebrate and mark the start of the Christmas period. But with the world climate summit starting in Copenhagen later this week, it’s never been more important for every level of government to give a lead on protecting the environment. So I’m delighted that Paul will be switching on the Council’s smart metre as the first step in helping create a greener, better Ffestiniog.”

Members of the public are invited for soft drinks and mince pies in the Council Offices during the Noson Goleuo on Thursday 3 December, and to find out more about the Council’s Green Charter.
